Parks & Green Spaces in Heaton

Living in a city like Newcastle brings many advantages — great nightlife, fantastic transport links, and excellent shopping opportunities, to name but a few.

However, some cities lack green spaces. Fortunately, if you’re looking for a neighbourhood in Newcastle that offers all the convenience of city living with some relaxed parks and green spaces, Heaton might be just up your street.

Heaton is also home to plenty of properties for students to rent. So, if you’re studying in Newcastle and want to find student housing that’s close to quiet parks and greens, consider Heaton.

What to do in Heaton Park, Newcastle

With its leafy green setting, expanse of grass, and impressive pavilion, Heaton Park is ideal for a stroll on a sunny afternoon. Gather with friends for a picnic, go for an early-morning run, or simply relax on a park bench and watch the world go by.

Located right in the heart of Heaton, this park is the ideal meeting place, so why not catch up with friends after a lecture and enjoy a coffee? Alternatively, break free from the confines of your desk and enjoy the sights and sounds of the park as you revise or get your uni reading done.

The Heaton Park pavilion houses toilets for convenience. And you can, of course, enjoy some alfresco dining at Sambuca, which serves delicious Italian cuisine.

FAQs

When does the Heaton Park festival take place?

While Heaton Park is a great addition to the community all year round, it really comes into its own in the summer — specifically for the Heaton Park Festival, which usually takes place in June.

During the Heaton Park festival, local ‘Heatonians’ and residents from across Newcastle gather in the park for live music, food, community stalls, and more. Local vendors provide refreshments and sell their wares — from crafts and paintings to jewellery and musical instruments.

Organised by Heaton Churches Together, the festival is free to attend and can be a great day out for everyone. Why not pop along to the next festival to see what Heaton has to offer?

What other parks and green spaces are in Heaton?

Heaton Park may take centre stage with its festival, but there are other parks and green spaces in this part of Newcastle, too.

Armstrong Park is smaller than Heaton Park, but it features mature woodland and is well connected to Jesmond Dene. If you go for a wander in Armstrong Park, keep an eye out for historical features, including King John’s Well and a post-medieval watermill.

If you fancy heading further afield, Heaton isn’t too far from the expansive Rising Sun Country Park. Boasting an incredible 162 hectares of greenery, it offers a real escape from the hustle and bustle of city life — and it’s only a 15-minute drive from Heaton. With ponds, woodland, and grassland, it’s a true haven for wildlife and makes a lovely break for students, too.
