Parks and green spaces close to Newcastle city centre

If you fancy wandering a little further out of the city centre, you’ll find an array of other great parks and green spaces. 

Shieldfield Green is a small park between the city centre and Sandyford that can be a nice addition to your running route. 

City Stadium in Ouseburn, meanwhile, is a good spot for sports activities. It has a running track and cycle tracks leading to Heaton

Speaking of Heaton, if you want to explore more of Newcastle’s parks, Heaton Park is a top choice. This charming space has gardens and plenty of wildlife. It is popular with locals and offers a peaceful retreat for leisurely walks, picnics, and family-friendly activities.

  • Exhibition Park: While it is a busy and thriving centre, you’re also just a stone’s throw from green spaces like Exhibition Park. Right in the heart of the city, this expansive park is easy to get to and has something for everyone. Well-maintained gardens, expansive lawns, and a picturesque boating lake make it perfect for a relaxing stroll or a peaceful picnic.

You’ll also find tennis courts, a basketball court, and a skate park — ideal for keeping active, especially in the summer. If you enjoy exercising outside, why not join the community park run, which takes place every Saturday at 9am?

Exhibition Park backs onto lush green fields known as the ‘Town Moor’, providing beautiful views. Keep an eye out for community events happening around this area and the town moors local resident cows.

  • Leazes Park and Lake: Leazes Park is another central space you can enjoy. Just opposite the Royal Victoria Infirmary, this traditional Victorian park features a beautiful lake, tree-lined paths, and lots of benches. It’s a great area for reading and revising, as well as walking or catching up with friends.

  • Summerhill Park: A short walk from Newcastle Train Station, Summerhill Park is a lawned community park with a small play area. It’s a lovely place to sit and have your lunch on a sunny day.
