Whether you’re after a chilled catch-up with friends or a night of cocktails and dancing, read on for our top nightlife recommendations.

The best pubs in Sandyford

Sandyford might be one of the smaller districts in Newcastle, but it’s packed with character — and plenty of pubs for every occasion. Relax at the Blue Bell, the ideal place for a cosy pint in a traditional pub setting. Nestled by the River Ouse, it boasts a fantastic beer garden and regularly hosts pub quizzes, music nights, and karaoke sessions. So, whether you’re having a low-key drink or putting your general knowledge to the test, there’s always something going on.

The Punch Bowl, located on the Jesmond-Sandyford border, is another must-try pub. In addition to offering an array of draught beers and cocktails, the Punch Bowl is home to Birria Bella, which serves Mexican dishes, including burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. They also host an intimate music venue upstairs where you can regularly sample various genres of local talent.

Head a little further south, to Ouseburn, and you’ll find the Tanners Arms, a creative hub within a traditional pub setting. With Happy Hours running every Monday to Thursday from 3-6 pm, it’s a top choice for unwinding after a lecture. Head to the trendy roof terrace during the week or refuel at the weekend with a hearty Sunday lunch.

For something a little bit different, there’s the Carriage. Though it’s technically in Jesmond, this quirky pub will certainly welcome Sandyford locals. Housed in an old railway station, its retro decor, old-school arcade games, and list of local cask ales make it well worth the four-minute walk! Did you know the Carriage also serves delicious plant-based food?

The best bars in Sandyford

If you’re looking to go out-out in Sandyford, you won’t be disappointed. Osborne Road in Jesmond has to be one of the best locations for bars and clubs in Newcastle — and it’s just a short stroll from the centre of Sandyford.

Start with Bar Blanc for a laid-back cocktail or glass of wine in stylish surroundings, then move on to Soho, where you can catch live sports or chill on the roof terrace. Resident DJs are on hand to keep the party going, and there are often unbeatable deals on food and drinks.

Another great bar just up the road is 97 & Social. Expect chic and inviting decor, top mixology, and even a sophisticated space for private parties — perfect for your end-of-year socials.

Other bars in the Sandyford area include the Cog and Wheel. Right on your doorstep, this independent cocktail bar is a hidden gem. Along with an extensive selection of ciders, ales, gins, and rums, you can enjoy delicious cocktails, including the signature ‘Cog On The Tyne’.

Looking for an evening of cocktails and catching up with friends? Head to As You Like It only a five minute walk away from Jesmond metro station and Newcastle City Centre and enjoy a range of sophisticated and eclectic cocktails. Post-cocktails head for a delicious meal and drinks to carry on your evening at The Holy Hobo, just a few steps away from As You Like It.
