The Newcastle Metro

Sandyford residents can also benefit from the Tyne and Wear Metro. Your nearest stop is the Jesmond Metro Station, and you can travel to different Newcastle districts quickly and efficiently. Whether you’re visiting a friend in Haymarket or doing some shopping at the Metrocentre in Gateshead, it’s a fast and regular service. 

The Metro is also a great way to explore further afield. Head out to South Shields or consider a day trip to Whitley Bay, where you can explore the coast. You can even head towards Newcastle Airport on the Metro, which can be especially helpful for international students who may wish to travel home during the holidays.

Getting around Newcastle from Sandyford

Because it’s so central, Sandyford is a great area for anyone who likes to get around on foot or bike. It’s ideal for students enrolled at either Newcastle University or Northumbria, with the main campuses being close enough to stroll to. Here are some approximate journey times:

  • Newcastle University is a 15-minute walk away — perfect for those 9 am lectures. Keen cyclists can make the journey in no time, and there are plenty of bike lock-ups across the city.

  • Meanwhile, Northumbria’s Ellison Place campus is even closer, just a 10-minute walk away.

  • If you’re studying at Northumbria University’s Coach Lane campus, don’t worry — there are regular bus services, taking around 30 minutes. 

  • Likewise, you can get buses to both the Newcastle University Business School and Medical School.

Sandyford is a small district of Newcastle, nestled between Jesmond to the north, Heaton to the east, and Ouseburn to the south. It’s also close to Newcastle city centre, making it an accessible area for students getting to and from Newcastle and Northumbria University campuses.

Sandyford is known for its convenient location — as a central neighbourhood, it’s a short walk from shops, bars, restaurants, parks, and more.

What are the bus services in Sandyford?

Sandyford is only two miles from Newcastle City Centre, which can be helpful for a bit of retail therapy on Northumberland Street. Hop on the 1, 37, or 38 service and you can be there in just five minutes.

There are several bus stops around Sandyford, including along Sandyford Road (by Newcastle Civic Centre) and next to Newton’s Coffee House.
